Lectures
WEEK 01
Mr. Fauzi introduced us to digital photography and image (DPI) during the first week. He started out by giving us an overview of Adobe Photoshop and emphasizing how crucial it is for graphic designers. These significances are:
- express our creativity
- create graphic design
- restoration of old images
- integrate graphics with text artistically
- make use of brushes
- change photo colour
- rectify mistakes in photograph
1.1 Photograph manipulation
Photograph manipulation with negative
- Since the 1850s, photographers have been captivated by the idea of combining several images on a single negative, which piqued their interest and inventiveness. To obtain desired effects, an image can be altered or transformed using a variety of ways and techniques. This process is known as photograph manipulation.
1.2 The invention of photoshop : Digital Imaging
What is digital imaging?
- The printed text, artwork, and photos are converted into digital images using a digital scanner or another imaging tool in the process of digital imaging.
1.3 Top 10 tips of successful graphics designer
- follows the tutorials
- experiment
- memorize all keyboards shortcuts
- try to replicate others work
- do participate in design competitions
- subscribe to online galleries
- smart objects for smart designers
- scaling artworks and proportions
- use actions to personalisze work
- organize the files properly
Summary of lecture 01
In all creative fields, including graphic designs, web design, animation, photography and digital magazine creation, Photoshop has emerged as a core. It is known as one of the most popular photo-editing software. Although Adobe Photoshop is an excellent application for graphic design, there is always more to learn for advanced users and a lot to learn for beginners.
Week 2
2.1 Introduction to basic composition
- focal point
- scale and hierarchy
- balance the elements
- white space
2.2 Rule of thirds
- Using two horizontal and two vertical lines, divide an image into thirds according to the rule of thirds. There are nine pieces with four junction locations in this hypothetical grid.
- The image will appear much more natural if the focal points are positioned at these intersecting places. Additionally, it is advised that any horizon be positioned on either the top or bottom horizontal lines.
2.3 Golden ratio
- A mathematical ratio called as the golden ration. It is frequently seen in nature, and when used to design, it encourages the creation of visually appealing compositions that seem organic and natural.
- The golden ratio in design is essentially about aesthetics using harmony and balance to create and appreciate beauty. The golden ratio gives an artistic quality to designs when used in them. Moreover, it is also a helpful formula for figuring up layout dimensions in the golden ratio. To implement the golden ratio in a very basic approach, just set the dimensions to 1:1:618 .
2.4 Composition : framing & cropping
Week 3
3.1 Lasso tool, pen tool and layering
In week three, I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop's lasso tool, pen tool, and layering techniques. I was able to apply what I learned about the functionality of various tools from this lecture while I was making my digital collage.
Week 4
4.1 What is adjustment layers
- Photoshop's Adjustment layers are a collection of extremely helpful, non- destructive imaging editing tolls that allow you to make colour and tone modifications to the image without permanently altering its pixel composition. I can alter, remove, or restore my original image at any time using the adjustment layers. This is a must-know tip that will improve the flexibility and efficiency of my photoshop workflow.
4.2 Types of adjustment
- brightness/ contrast
- level
- curves
- exposure
- selective colour
4.3 Filters
- One crucial feature of Adobe's graphics editor is the ability to modify photographs using filters. There are filters to add blur, alter colour, or provide entirely other image effects. For this use, Photoshop provides an almost infinite range of filters.
Week 5
Digital photography
5.1 Exposure setting
- Exposure is the amount of light which reaches the camera sensor or film.
5.1.1 Main parts of the camera
- Camera body - shutter, image sensor, LCD screen
- Camera lens - Aperture/iris
5.1.2 Iris, Shutter speed, IS0
- Shutter speed and aperture are the only two camera settings that actually impact an image's "luminous exposure." The brightness of your images is also influenced by the third parameter, camera ISO.
5.1.3 Iris
- control the flow of light entering the lens
- measured by f- stop, indicated by the sequence of f - number
- the lower the f-number the larger the lens open
5.1.4 Shutter
- a little plastic sheet that opens and closes to let light onto or block light from reaching the film.
- measured in seconds, E.g: 1/1000 s,1/500 s,1/250 s,1/125 s,1/60 s,1/30 s,1/15 s,1/8 s,1/4 s,1/2 s,1 s, 2 s, 3 s…
- originally alluded to the film's sensitivity or capacity for "light gathering". In digital photography, ISO stands for the sensor's sensitivity, or signal gain.
- common ISO setting are 100, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400….
- the lower the number of ISO the less sensitive the camera to light and the finer to grain.
5.2 Lens perspective
5.2.1 Types of lens
- wide angle lens
- standard lens
- tele lens
- The right lens Angle of view is affected by lens choice, given desired framing. Distinct lenses serve distinct functions and are made for different uses. Focal length is a classification system for lenses.
5.2.2 Focal length
- measurement from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera's sensor.
- the shorter the focal length the wider the angle of view
5.2.3 Depth of field
- the percentage of the image that is clear and focusable.
- the smaller the aperture use, the grater the depth of field
5.2.4 Wide angle lens
- an ideal for fitting a large area into your frame
- useful for landscape photography or street photography
- almost everything is focus, unless the objects is very close to the lens
5.2.5 Standard lens
- fairly accurate representation of what the human eye see both in terms of visual angle and perspective
- more natural than other images took by other lenses
5.2.6 Tele lens
- great for isolating an object that is far away
- allows to photograph a subjects from a distance because of the magnification
5.3 Smartphone vs DSLR
5.3.1 Smartphone
- designed to carry out multitude functions
- limited by size of lens and sensor
5.3.2 DSLR
- designed to capture images
- much larger lens and sensor compared to phones
Week 6
Poster Design
6.1 7 principles of poster design
- emphasis
- balance ad alignment
- contrast
- repetition
- proportion
- movement
- white space
Module Information
Task and exercises
Exercise week 1
- List down my 3 favorites graphic design composition work from Pinterest.
Design 01
The design's image initially captured my attention, and when I read the phrase "We never alone," I was able to connect this message with the image right away. Personally, I believe that the message on this poster has reached its intended viewers.
Design 02
I enjoy designs with a retro aesthetic. The photographs are arranged effectively; they don't appear messy in my opinion. Additionally, I believe that the font choice is extremely suitable for this design.
Design 03
I believe that this poster does a good job of presenting the intended message. When I first saw this poster, I could easily understand its message because of the text's placement and the image's thoughtful arrangement.
Task 02
Week 2 practical : Project 1A : Collage design elements
