PHASE 1 : OBSERVATION

In the artwork titled "Environmental Protection", presented in portrait format, there is one dolphin at the centre that stands out. It is surrounded by gentle colours, with a light blue sky and darker blues for the ocean. The top part of the dolphin is painted in black and the lower part of the dolphin painted in greyish-white colour. There is a phrase in this artwork : "Human may needs facial mask. But animals don't."

PHASE 2 : ANALYSIS

The artwork cleverly combines various elements to convey its message effectively. By contrasting the dolphin's black upper body with its with lower body against the backdrop's varying shades of blue, it immediately draws attention and creates visual interest. Emphasis is skilfully crafted through the portrayal of pollution, represented by a black area that sharply contrasts with surrounding colours, this makes people notice the harmful effects of environmental damage. Additionally, the integration of word and image further reinforces emphasis, with the phrase "Human[sic] may needs[sic] facial mask. But animals don't." serving as a hint about the theme and emphasises the importance of water pollution and protecting the environment. The artwork achieves balance through an asymmetrical and the golden ration arrangement, distributing weight equally while allowing for variation in mass among its elements. Though individual elements like the dolphin may differ in specific characteristic, the overall sense of balance is preserved. The artwork uses similar colours to create unity. It mainly consists of different shades of blue, black, white and light grey. This colour scheme helps everything blend together nicely.

PHASE 3 : INTERPRETATION

Yung Chia Tai's artwork focuses on environmental protection, especially marine life preservation which is related to the UNSDG Goal 14. His minimalist posters effectively communicate the urgency of addressing issues like oil spills and plastic pollution. Through simple yet powerful designs, he prompts viewers to reflect on the consequences of human actions on marine ecosystem. I found that he often use sarcastic phrases highlights the selfishness in human behaviour towards the environment, the phrase in his another artwork ( fig1.1) : " Human [sic] may needs [sic] straws, but animals don't." is one of the example. His artworks serve as a call to action, urging people to reconsider their attitudes and behaviours to protect our oceans and the creatures within them.

MINIMALISM ART STYLE

Since the majority of Yung Chia Tai's artwork, including the pieces I've selected for task 2 visual analysis, adheres to the minimalist art style, I've undertaken additional research into minimalism art style in graphic design.

What is minimal in graphic design?
  • Minimal graphic design uses :
    • Limited elements
    • Abundant negative space
    • A restrained colour palette
  • Each elements in the design serves a specific purpose
  • Emphasis is placed on achieving balance and symmetry
Key elements in minimalism graphic design
  • Simple, clean, lots of negative space
  • Purposeful element
  • Few colours
  • Balance
  • Simple typography

 FEEDBACK

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK

 Week 5

Overall is good but need to have some minor changes:
    • Can put "[sic]" in front of the words that have grammar issues.
    • There is not really harmony in this artwork as it has contrast.
    • Mention the UNSDG goal I have chose previously in phase 3 of visual analysis.
    • This artwork also exhibits a composition based on the golden ratio.
