IDEATION & VISUAL REFERENCES

I want my design to be minimalist yet effectively convey the message of Goal 14: Life below Water. I’m searching for artwork that shows how irresponsible human actions harm marine life. I’m particularly interested in pieces that contrast human activities with underwater life.

Below are some visual references that closely align with my vision for how I want my artwork to look like :

Fig 1.0 Think by Sandra Beer, Week 5 (6/3/2024)

Fig 1.1 Moby-Dick by JazzberryBlueWeek 5 (6/3/2024)

Fig 1.2 Planet b? by Wesley-Morgan Harwood, Week 5 (6/3/2024)

I want to create a design that is like the visual references I’ve provided above, where have a sense of balance and employ strong contrast to convey deep meanings.

When you first look at the designs, you might see something simple. But if you look closer, you see more. Like in Fig 1.0, where there’s a person fishing on a boat, but he is not catching fish, he is catching plastic. It’s like saying humans only care about themselves and don’t think about how they hurt the sea animals.

Through my design, I seek to provoke awareness of human selfishness and its detrimental impact on our oceans, inspiring viewers to reconsider their attitudes and strive for positive change in marine conservations efforts.

SKETCHES

 Sketch 01

This sketch shows how people can be selfish and foolish. It is about a man at the beach, sitting in a float ring and throwing his trash into the ocean. He looks happy and relaxed, not caring about the damage he is causing. He doesn't think about how his actions harm the ocean.

 SKETCH 02

In this sketch, I'm using wavy lines and words to create a sense of continuation to this artwork. It is all about plastic pollution in the ocean. I want people to understand that we need to keep the sea free from plastic. The sea creatures in this sketch are filled with different kinds of plastic to show how harmful it is to them. I hope this helps people see why we need to stop using so much plastic.

 SKETCH 03

In this sketch. I am aiming to show a clear difference between what human do and what life is like under the water. It's similar to the first sketch, which also talks about how the things we do can really mess up the ocean. But in this one, I want to show both why plastic pollution happens and what it does to the marine life. It's about how the things we do can really mess up the ocean and the creatures that live there.

Fig 2.0 Visual reference of the Orca, Week 6 (13/3/2024)

I have a personal preferences for sketch 03 among all the sketches I’ve created, as it effectively promotes Goal 14: Life Below Water and aligns closely with my initial vision outlined in the ideation and visual references. In addition, after considering Dr Jinchi’s feedback, I have selected sketch 03 to continue on the next step.

 FINAL SKETCH

In refining sketch 03 as my final design choice, I focus on enhancing the impact by adjusting the size of the person lying on the beach, thereby accentuating his actions and drawing more attention to the narrative. While most elements in sketch 03 remained unchanged, these subtle adjustments serve to heighten the overall effectiveness of the composition.

DIGITISATION (PROCESS)

I decided to digitally illustrates my final design using the IbisPaint app.

I began by selecting the colour palette for the sky and the ocean, then proceeded to draw the orca. I researched visual references of orca anatomy to ensure accuracy while drawing.

Fig 2.3 Visual reference of orca anatomy, Week 7 (20/3/2024)

I incorporated a yellowish tone into the upper part of the orca's body to give it the appearance of an island.

Fig 2.4 Process 2 of digitisation, Week 7 (20/3/2024)

Next, I began illustrating the guy lying on the beach. I referred to visual guides to ensure the lying posture is draw correctly .

Fig 2.6 Visual reference of a man sunbathing, Week 7 (20/3/2024)

Continuing, I depicted various types of plastic products in the ocean to highlight the issue of plastic pollution.

Fig 2.7 Process 4 of digitisation, Week 7 (20/3/2024)

Initially, I had only drawn one coconut tree, but following Dr. Jinchi's suggestion, I decided to include two coconut trees of varying heights to enhance the overall visual impact of the design.

Fig 2.8 Process 5 of digitisation, Week 7 (20/3/2024)

Subsequently, I illustrates the rubbish left behind the person lying on the beach. The majority of the waste depicted was plastic, as I aim to emphasise the prevalence of plastic pollution. Additionally, I illustrate a rubbish bin. Following Dr. Jinchi's suggestion, I added some flies flying around the rubbish bin.

Finally, I depicted the adverse effects of plastic pollution on marine life, illustrating the dire situation they face due to environmental degradation.

 FINAL DESIGN

RATIONALE

 Purpose of the design

This design aims to help protect marine life, in line with UNSDG Goal 14: Life Below Water. It focuses on tackling the widespread problem of plastic pollution, which harms ocean creatures. The goal is to find solutions to reduce plastic waste and its harmful effects on underwater systems,

Explanation of the decision made in the design

This design focuses on a guy throwing plastic waste on the beach, something many of us have probably done without much thought. The goal is to make people feel guilty about their contribution to plastic pollution. By showing this everyday scene, I want to make everyone realise that we're all part of the problem, even if we don't realise it.

The other part of the design shows a deserted island and an orca. If you look closely, you'll see that the island is actually part of the orca's body. I picked orca for the design because they're the big bosses of the ocean, like the wolves of the sea. In the design, the guy finds refuge on this island, thanks to the orca's kindness. Despite the man's irresponsible actions, the orca doesn't harm him even though it might have the ability to do so. This is a powerful reminder that nature provides for us, even when we're not grateful or respectful. It's a warning that if we keep destroying nature, we'll eventually destroy ourselves too.

Next, the trash bin also plays a big role. It's meant to highlight how careless people can be. Despite having a bin nearby, the person in the picture throws trash all over the beach and into the ocean, just for his own convenience. Other than that, the coconut tree is to make the top part of the orca look more like an island. Besides, the sea animals are drawn in dark colours, and some of them are shown eating or tangled in plastic. This is to show how plastic pollution really harms their lives.

Overall, the top part of the design aims to explain why plastic pollution happens, while the bottom part shows how people's irresponsible actions impact the ocean.

 Design Principles

In this design, I used the design principle of contrast. The top part is bright and colourful, showing the man enjoying life. Meanwhile, the lower part is dull and dark, with low saturation to depict pollution in the sea. This stark difference in colours helps emphasise the contrast between a good life above and the environmental damage below. Other than that, balance is also applied in this design. The design achieves balance through an asymmetrical arrangement, distributing weight equally while allowing for variation in mass among its elements. Lastly, movement is incorporated into this design too. The ocean is wavy, giving it a sense of motion. Additionally, I included wavy lines to make the sea animals inside appear as if they're in motion as well, adding dynamism to the scene.

 FEEDBACK

Specific Feedback

 Week 6
  • Love the idea of sketch 03, can proceed with sketch 03
  • Add more sea animals in sketch 03 for a richer marine life portrayal, research the best angle for the guy's lying posture
  • Have to come out with more sketches to explore ideas
  • Sketch 02 seems typical, but the wavy lines and the font add an interesting flow to the artwork.

 Week 7
  • Include 2 coconut tree of different height for variety
  • Add flies around the rubbish bin to highlight it
  • Define why the orca is the key focus in the design
  • More trash on the beach
  • Improve the ocean's appearance to make it less smooth
  • Colour works well together, overall good work
